Best Time of Year to Scuba Dive in San Diego

The truth: You can dive in San Diego year-round.

But different seasons offer different experiences.

Summer (June–September)

Best for:

• Warmest water

• Leopard shark season

• Calmer surface conditions

Water temps range from 65–72°F.

Visibility can range 10–30 feet depending on plankton blooms.

This is peak season for beginner dives and guided tours.

Fall (October–November)

Often the best visibility of the year.

  • Fewer crowds

  • Stable ocean conditions

  • Water still relatively warm

Many local divers consider fall the “secret season.”

Winter (December–March)

Cooler water (55–60°F), but:

  • Excellent visibility some days

  • Dramatic kelp forest scenes

  • Fewer divers

With proper exposure protection, winter diving is absolutely doable.

Spring (April–May)

More variable conditions.

Still good for training and certification dives.

If your goal is calm, controlled instruction — any season works with a private instructor who monitors daily conditions carefully.
